Call for Proposals: Frizzell Family Learning & Speaker Series 2024-25

The Frizzell Family Learning and Speaker Series is an annual program of student-organized events on agriculture, environment, and health from the perspective of the social sciences. This year, the series is accepting event proposals from small groups of students within this or any other topic area relevant to CEGU courses. We particularly invite proposals for lectures, panels, and workshops with invited guests from beyond the UChicago community, but will also consider proposals for other types of event programming in these fields.

Selected proposals will receive funding through the Frizzell Series and administrative support through the Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization. Successful applicants are expected to actively participate in the planning and promotion of their event(s) throughout the year as well as to serve as support staff, moderators, and/or discussants on day of. Event timeframes will differ from proposal to proposal but will be discussed and mutually agreed with CEGU staff and faculty.
Proposals should be made by groups of two or three current UChicago undergraduates, at least one of whom is a CEGU major, and should include a preliminary event or series title, detailed abstract, list of possible invitees, and cover letter describing why the proposed event is relevant and timely in the context of CEGU’s other programming. Call for Applications: Environmental Law Undergraduate Clinical Practicum

University of Chicago undergraduates who have declared the major in Environment, Geography and Urbanization (CEGU) and rising fourth year Environmental and Urban Studies majors (ENST) are invited to apply to participate in the Undergraduate Clinical Practicum in the Abrams Environmental Law Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School.

Through clinic participation, students learn substantive environmental law and procedures for addressing concerns through the courts, administrative agencies, and legislative bodies. Students develop core advocacy competencies, such as spotting issues, conducting factual investigations, performing practical legal research, advocating through written and oral communications, planning cases, managing time, and addressing ethical issues and dilemmas. Fourth year students also have the option to use the practicum to fulfill the Capstone requirement. Learn more and apply here.↗

Research Assistant, Urban Theory Lab

The Urban Theory Lab seeks a Research Assistant to support bibliographic work for a current book project of Prof. Neil Brenner (Sociology and CEGU) and Swarnabh Ghosh (Harvard University) on the role of cities and urbanization in contemporary climate emergencies.

The selected candidate will be a current graduate or undergraduate student at The University of Chicago, and will ideally have prior experience using the Zotero reference management software in the context of advanced social scientific research. This is a paid role and should expect to commit 15–20 hours per week to the project for a period of 3–5 months, starting as soon as possible. Candidates should submit a cover letter, C.V., and writing sample and expect to attend one interview.
Urban Innovation Grants for Student Organizations

The Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation is launching Urban Innovation Grants for Student Organizations, offering funding up to $5,000 focusing on events and conferences at the university, bringing in outside speakers, and other efforts that advance knowledge and community engagement around cities and urbanization. Research being conducted by student groups may be considered if it is directly supervised by faculty or university centers/institutes. Proposals are open to current undergraduate and graduate student organizations and groups at the University of Chicago. Awards must be used for the year they are awarded, beginning on July 1, and applicants may submit more than one proposal, provided each is distinct.
Undergraduate Research Assistant Positions with Environmental Frontiers Campus

The Environmental Frontiers Initiative invites applications for EFCampus Research Assistants beginning Summer Quarter 2024. EFCampus brings together students, faculty, and staff to collaboratively explore and implement sustainability practices on campus. It is a unique, educational research opportunity for students interested in environmental issues and broader climate change goals.
Research assistant positions are full-time roles over Summer Quarter, June 10 to August 16, and are paid $16.00/hour. This is a hybrid opportunity, with an expectation of working 2-3 days per week in the office and the option to work remotely the remaining days. RA positions may have the opportunity to extend into the 2024-2025 academic year, which will be determined upon completion of summer work.
Friends of the Forest Preserves: Crew Leader

Friends of the Forest Preserves seeks Crew Leaders to be part of the Forest Preserve Experience (FPE) leadership team. FPE is a five-week summer program for teens, focused on job skill development, restoration training and work, environmental education, and exposure to the forest preserves and jobs in conservation. For many participants, this program serves as a first job, so Crew Leaders excel in relating to and guiding youth through the program. Successful candidates have strong communication skills, experience leading high school aged students, and a passion for environmental conservation.
